WILKES was easily one of the most attractive students during his time at Hogwarts. He was able to make girls swoon by merely being in his presence. He didn't dislike the attention; he loved it. He was happy to be the center of attention and never ran out of interesting new girls to talk. As soon as he thought he was starting to get to know someone, someone new, better, more interesting, fresh would appear, and he would be off flattering them nearly faint.
JONES was a different story. She couldn't care less about crushing on or kissing boys. She was a kindhearted girl with an affinity for her schoolwork. Focused, would be a good word to describe her. The only person who was capable of bringing her out of her shell was her best friend MCLAGGEN, an outgoing Gryffindor who didn't give a single care to her schooling. They were an odd pair who met in their third year working on an Ancient Runes project together, and somehow, it stuck. JONES encourages MCLAGGEN to study with her, and MCLAGGEN drags JONES along to social events around the school that she normally would just skip.
MCLAGGEN has always had a crush on WILKES. To her, he is the epitome of attractive. But the normally outgoing and exciting girl to everyone else can't help but freeze up when he walks by. MCLAGGEN ceaselessly talks about her crush to JONES, who doesn't necessarily have any advice to give. She's a listening ear and very patient, but is starting to tire of MCLAGGEN's excitement because it doesn't seem to be going anywhere. At the beginning of their 6th year, JONES thought that the crush had finally run its course...
...until WILKES asked JONES out.
It was MEGA awkward. JONES, who didn't have any interest in WILKES in particular declined as politely as she could, but the entire time all she could think about was MCLAGGEN. After the awkward encounter, JONES ran to BADDOCK to tell him what happened, a friend of hers from childhood who was also acquainted with MCLAGGEN (and everyone who knew MCLAGGEN knew that she was positively in love with WILKES. BADDOCK was just as surprised as JONES about the entire incident, but he was silently relieved. BADDOCK, keeping his feelings completely to himself, had been holding back feelings for MCLAGGEN for the last several years. Too many things were standing in the way- MCLAGGEN's crush on WILKES as well as all of the tension between Gryffindor and Slytherin (especially with the recent incident between James Potter, Remus Lupin, MONTAGUE, and Severus Snape.
But BADDOCK saw an opportunity and he decided, on a whim, to take it. He told JONES that the best thing to do was to go tell MCLAGGEN what had happened between her and WILKES. He, on the other hand, waited a few days. He approached MCLAGGEN and told her that he knew that WILKES had asked JONES out. He told her that the best way to make a boy come to you was to make him jealous... He lied, saying that he really wanted JONES, who was notorious for not wanting MCLAGGEN to warm up to the idea of being with him, BADDOCK asked MCLAGGEN if she wanted to convince everyone that they had started dating. MCLAGGEN, still upset by the idea of WILKES wanting her friend more than her, agreed. BADDOCK was delighted. He was pained by the idea of a ruse being the way he wanted to bring them together, but he was desperate, and he was already too far in to turn back.
JONES was very confused. She didn't understand why her two friends had started to spend more time together...more private time together. Rumors were swirling all over the school. A Gryffindor and a Slytherin? It was just as much a topic of school conversation as the incident by the lake. With this going on, and WILKES still "bumping" into her every other day, she was getting a little overwhelmed. WILKES, on the other hand, was determined to get JONES to go out with him, and he wasn't going to back down any time soon.
Will JONES finally go out with WILKES, even to just get him to leave her alone? Will she end up seeing something else in him? Will MCLAGGEN get the attention of WILKES by publicly dating one of her friends? Will BADDOCK succeed in getting MCLAGGEN to fall for him? Will JONES and MCLAGGEN's friendship survive all this drama?
